BEWARE - Black Market Botox!

Recent reports in the news have helped to raise awareness of the poor regulation of the facial aesthetics industry in the UK.

In fact it's totally UNREGULATED which means that ANYONE can 'train' to inject your face with toxin and/or filler.

Scary enough in my book!

However, what is perhaps even more frightening is the fact that there are toxins and fillers 'out there' which can simply be bought on the black market and injected into your face without you being any the wiser!

Sadly these products are being sourced on the cheap and injected into people's faces without any consideration to the actual ingredients, manufacturing conditions, sterility, efficacy or safety.

More and more reports are widely available on social media showing botched treatments and horrific adverse effects as a result of the wrong product being placed in the wrong place.

As a registered dentist and healthcare professional, your safety is of paramount importance to me.

Licensed brands of Botulinum A Toxin MUST be prescribed FOR YOU following a face-to-face consultation with a trained healthcare professional who is registered and regulated by a professional body such as the General Medical or Dental Council.

Toxin MUST be sourced from a certified pharmacy. This ensures the quality and safety of the product from a trusted source.

I use Allergan Botox in my clinic and you can check the product has either a Red or Blue top.

Here are some steps that you can take to check your injector is safe, trained, regulated and using the right products:

1. Ask to see proof of qualification of training for their profession (dentist, doctor, nurse).

2. Check their registration number with their regulatory body (dental, medical council) which is freely available on the websites.

3. Ensure you receive a face-to-face consultation PRIOR to treatment.

4. Request to see the box/bottle of toxin prior to treatment. It should show YOUR name as it has been prescribed FOR YOU.

5. Check the bottle - Allergan Botox has a red or blue top depending on the volume..

6. If you are not 100% certain that your injector is trained or that the products have been sourced from a certified pharmacy...STOP. Do not proceed with treatment until you are satisfied with steps 1-5.

Your face comes FIRST!

Don't be fooled into believing that your injector is who they say they are without checking out their credentials first and foremost. If your treatment cost seems too good to be true...if probably is!
